"My photography shows people and places with a sense of reality
and the darkness that sometimes accompanies it. Yet within or surrounding the
reality, a sense of redemption can often be found." Photographer Dan Limmer
An exhibition entitled "Reality and Redemption"
by Dan Limmer will be on display at the Kennebunk Free Library in Hank’s Gallery
during the month of July 2008. This very talented artist will be displaying a
thought provoking and inspiring collection of black and white photographs. Dan
will be hosting an open reception on Wednesday, July 16th, from
5:30-7:30 p.m.; the public is invited to attend. (Monday and Tuesday 9:30 a.m. -
8:00 p.m., Wednesday 12:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 9:30
a.m. - 5:00 p.m.)
Dan first developed an interest in photography while in high
school but put it aside as other aspects of his life took precedence. After a
career in law enforcement and emergency medical services Dan went on to write
the best selling EMT textbook Emergency Care. His love of photography has
allowed him to exercise his creative talents, while his photo documentary work
also serves the purpose of telling stories that really need to be told. This is
best evidenced by his photos taken in the New Orleans French Quarter two days
prior to Hurricane Katrina. At the time, Dan had no idea that he would be
documenting the French Quarter "as it would never be seen again". His portrait
entitled "guitar man" is a haunting illustration that truly captures the
heart and soul of the pre-Katrina New Orleans.
Dan is completely self-taught although he has had the benefit of
several mentors who have helped him develop and refine his style. "Black and
white is my favorite medium to display this work. It invokes the drama in the
image and takes on a true traditional documentary style." As a photojournalist,
Dan’s work has been seen in the Portland Press Herald, York County Coast Star,
Portsmouth Herald and other papers. He has also shot interior and cover photos
for several books and magazines. Currently he is working on a photo documentary
about the work and lives of Emergency Medical Technicians around the country.
Dan is a member of the National Press Photographer’s
Association. His photo portfolio and other work may be seen as http://photos.danlimmer.com.
The Kennebunk Free Library is pleased and honored to be able to present this
exhibit for the month of July.
