Position Opening
Kennebunk Free Library

Library Director

The Kennebunk Free Library has an immediate opening for a Library Director with strong human resources and fiscal management skills and the ability to bring creative services and programming to the community.

The Kennebunk Free Library, founded in 1882, has been very successful in executing its mission: to serve the diverse cultural, informational, educational, and recreational needs of the community through resources, expert and caring services, and an inviting and accessible facility. The Library is home to print and media collections of approximately 45,000 volumes. The Library includes a Children’s Illustrator’s Gallery and an art gallery that hosts rotating exhibits. A broad variety of community programs are offered by the Library. In addition, the Friends of the Kennebunk Free Library are active in supporting many activities.

The Board of Trustees is seeking a Library Director who will build upon the Library’s accomplishments and establish new programming that is innovative, creative, and responsive to the needs of the community. The Board seeks applications from individuals who are familiar with and can demonstrate the American Library Association’s Statement of Core Competencies and the Maine Library Association’s Public Library Standards, with particular reference to the Management competencies and standards.

The Board seeks applications from individuals who demonstrate the following:

  • Masters degree in Library Science from an accredited institution;
  • Minimum of five years full-time library employment, two in a supervisory position;
  • Experience creating a budget, presenting and defending it to the Town’s citizens and officials, and implementing the approved budget;
  • Strong background and skills in a broad range of current library technologies;
  • Demonstrated record of innovative library programming and outreach;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • A "can do" leadership philosophy that is both cooperative and inclusive;
  • Knowledge of fundraising techniques, including grant sources (preference for record of successful receipt of grant funds);
  • Documented success in collaborative endeavors with community stakeholders;
  • Establishment of a warm, friendly atmosphere that welcomes diversity in all ways; and
  • A sense of humor combined with customer service attitude and skills.
