KFL Offers Free BASIC Internet, E-mail and Word Processing Classes

Basic Computer classes are held on the first three Wednesdays of the month at 11 AM for a one hour session, Topics change each month: September is Basic Word Processing; October, Basic Internet; November, Basic Email.

Programs will be successive, that is, your skills will build on what you learn the previous week. Practice is encouraged! For maximum learning, sign up for all three classes on the topic.

Sign up for each class is required; space is limited. Call the library at 985-2173 for more information and to reserve a spot. Classes are offered on a first-come, first-served basis and fill quickly. A limited number of spaces are available for laptop users—please indicate if you plan on using your own laptop. Please be prompt; because the library is closed to the public on Wednesday mornings, the instructor will meet you at the front door 10 minutes before class. When you sign up, staff will ask you questions about your computer needs so that we can address them in class.

These classes will serve as a starting point to greater skills and expertise—it just takes practice!  Once you gain these skills you’ll be on the road to independent computing. Sorry, we cannot address hardware questions or computer repairs.

Basic Word Processing in January: We will use Microsoft Word 2003 as our word processing software. (Sorry, we cannot teach earlier or later versions of Word). Learn how to format your work to give a “professional” look. Typical questions we’ll ask so that we can assess your class needs might include:

●    Do you know how to use a mouse? If not, we can suggest many ways to become acquainted with a mouse before class begins.
●    Have you ever used a computer to type a document?
●    Do you have a specific document you want to write?
●    Do you have specific questions about tasks in word processing? For example, saving documents? Using different fonts?

Basic Email Class in March: For people who already have some basic computer skills, this class will help you set up an email account and learn how to write, send and receive messages; how to send an attachment (photos, for example), and how to file or delete your mail. Typical questions we’ll ask so that we can assess your class needs might include:

●    Do you want to set up an email account? If so, be sure to come prepared with possible user names and passwords of at least 8 characters long.
●    Do you want a general email refresher?
●    Do you already have an email account? What email program do you have?
●    Do you have specific questions about how to complete a task in your email account? What are they?
●    To practice, bring a few email addresses of family of friends to contact
●    Keep in mind that KFL may not be able to answer all email questions--instructors are not familiar with every email program, but most actions are similar despite the email program used.
